As far as the tangibility of the Bagh was concerned, it was bought from its original owner by paying a sum of INR 5,00,000, collected in a nationwide fundraiser. Major developments in the freedom struggle such as the Non Co-operation Movement started by Mahatma Gandhi, and the return of the British knighthood by Rabindranath Tagore as a symbolic act to renounce the massacre, etc. Entrance to the Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar, February 2018Īftermath of the Massacre: The Jallianwala Bagh massacre caused a nationwide uproar, as a result thriving the freedom movement like a massive wildfire. This incident is known as the most gruesome massacre in India’s freedom struggle, that is mourned upon, a hundred years later, until today. Colonel Dyer, upon learning about this gathering, marched along with hundreds of his troops to the Bagh, openly firing on the civilians – men, women, children and the elderly alike, killing thousands within a matter of just ten minutes. On April 13, 1919, the day of the spring harvest festival of Baisakhi, people gathered in large numbers at the Jallianwala Bagh located in the heart of Amritsar, to partake in the festivities and also to determine the further course of action for the freedom struggle in the light of the arrest of the two leaders, all along completely ignorant of the enforcement of the public curfew. Following the Rowlatt Act, the temporarily appointed Brigadier General, Colonel Dyer also imposed a curfew on the assemblage of more than four people in public spaces. The then Punjab government had imposed the Rowlatt Act, authorising the arrest of anyone without a warrant, under which prominent freedom leaders namely Dr. The northern state of Punjab was especially ignited by the fire to attain freedom from the brutal foreign rule.
